This week I’m featuring an amazing cosplayer who has made some amazing cosplays. He’s won multiple cosplay contests and even started a cosplay organization.
Here he is- the amazing- Kozmo-Kai Cosplay!
I want to bring to you all some of the coolest, most complex and simply beautiful costumes I’ve seen! We’ll be featuring new cosplayers EVERY FRIDAY!
What is your name / cosplay name?
What first got you into cosplay?
I first got into cosplay by deciding it was time I finally made a try at it. I used to attend conventions solely for Yu-Gi-Oh Card game tournaments. I never thought I’d ever consider cosplay as something I’d do, especially competitively because at the time as it wasn’t too mainstream in my country, however, something about seeing others not only express their love for various fandoms through wearable art, but also challenging themselves to do it, struck a chord in me each time I set foot inside a convention! Being an artistic and person all my life, keen to always face and master a new challenge, it only felt fitting that I gave it a try. I was just ready to go all out and do my best! So after several “Okay next event I’d try cosplaying later!” I finally made my cosplay debut in July, 2016.
What is the hardest part of cosplaying for you?
Understanding where to stop in my pursuit for perfection. I tend to want to present my highest standard of work with each cosplay and that arises from me being aggressively competitive with myself in everything I do. I always strive to do better than my last attempt, I’m a perfectionist and even though having that mindset comes with it’s rewards & challenges, sometimes it’s just about having fun and not taking things so seriously. Not everything has to be about competition whether it may be with yourself or others.
What’s your favorite character you’ve cosplayed?
What cosplay took you the longest to complete?
Brainiac. it took me 3 months to complete.
You are from the Caribbean, any travel plans for foreign cons?
I definitely hope to fly out to con in the UK sometime. I have alot of supporters over there and I’d love to meet them all.
What was your first cosplay contest that you entered? What has improved since that first cosplay contest?
My first cosplay contest was in the summer of 2016 at the Caribbean Cosplay Championships hosted by ALIAS Entertainment Expo in Trinidad & Tobago where I placed 4th. It was the first day I ever wore a cosplay and I’ve come a very long way since then. I’ve improved on not only my attention to detail when designing and proper time management but being more imaginative and creatively unique, as 99% of each of my competitive cosplays comprise of free-handed, self-designed patterns and detailing.
What does your competitive record consist of?
1st place x 5
2nd place x 2
3rd place x 1
4th place x 1
What makes you cosplay a certain character?
How well I believe I can bring the character to life through my own unique way of designing & crafting.
To any cosplayers that would like to get started in cosplay contests what advice would you give?
Consistency wins you the league: Compete as often as you can. “Repetition is the father of learning” and the more you take to the stage, the more constructive criticism you garner from the judges, which in turn causes you to develop at a faster rate and fosters a drive inside you to want to keep doing better.
Pride > Prize: Your standard of work is what lives on, not how you place competitively or what you win! Your top priority should always be to top yourself by doing better than your last and never settling for ANYTHING less than your best.
I see that you are also the founder of COSPL868. Tell us more about the organization!
I created COSPL868 in my very early days of cosplay, with the purpose and intent of helping forge a pathway forward for my fellow local cosplayers of Trinidad & Tobago to become more influential and recognized for their talents, locally and globally.
Why? because at heart I believe that there is a wide plethora of talented cosplayers, artists and actors within our shores. I wish for them all, international success and a home to showcase our collected talent as a united front. Speaking sincerely, I genuinely want the best for my local geek/pop-culture community.
COSPL868 also does friendly community service by attending organized charities, movie premieres at cinemas and hospital/orphanage visits with selected cosplayers, all dressed in various costumes. We also do free monthly giveaways such as clothing, toys, comic books, event tickets and various Japanese paraphernalia to members of the community as a way of humbly supporting and giving back to our fans because we GENUINELY value them. This is just one of our many cornerstones.
What cosplay would you love to compete in / make someday?
Sigfried from Soul Calibur.
Where can we find you online?
