This week I’m featuring an amazing cosplayer and friend who I’ve always looked up to sense I’ve started cosplaying. She’s an amazing seamstress and she’s always able to bring a sexy aspect to her cosplays while still being amazingly accurate to the character. Without further ado here she is!
Kali Neko!
I want to bring to you all some of the coolest, most complex and simply beautiful costumes I’ve seen! By interviewing cosplayers we can get an inside look of their process and see the person behind the art. Follow CosplaySass to stay updated on some of the greatest cosplayers to know about. We’ll be featuring new cosplayers EVERY FRIDAY!
What is your name / cosplay name?
I started out as Kali Neko no Kage, but have since gone simply with Kali Neko.

What first got you into cosplay?
I was in college, maybe 2nd semester freshman year, and I was teaching myself to sew. Posted a lot of the stuff I was making and re-purposing online, a few small commissions from friends, all that. My friends whom I met in the school’s anime club suggested that I cosplay since I was making so much. I figured why not and set to make my first cosplay. Looking back, it was t r a s h. But I enjoyed making it and the compliments I got and it kept me going. Now look at me!

What is the hardest part of cosplaying for you?
Buying materials and prop making. I have no scope for accurately getting just enough material that I need. I always overshoot it just in case I mess up and will need more fabric or whatever. But then that leaves me with whole extra yards that I end up forgetting I even have.
I’m not sure why, but I process propmaking differently than sewing. It makes me nervous. But I’ve been slowly practicing and reserching all the youtube tutorials and text/photo walk throughs I can find online. I’m learning so much about foam and adhesives and paint, etc.
What’s your favorite character you’ve cosplayed?
So far there’s two, Dark Link from Legend of Zelda and Blair the cat from Soul Eater.
What cosplay took you the longest to complete?
This is really hard to answer because I typically spend weeks on most of my cosplay. Not because it’s complicated, but because I’m lazy lol.

What have you learned since you started cosplaying?
I’ve learned a lot about sewing and tailoring. It’s nothing professional quality, but I can mend my clothes or add personal touches to a lot of things. Sewing costumes kinda makes me want to learn quilting now. I know this is backwards for most people who learn how to sew.
