I’ve been posting a lot of cosplay breakdowns and cosplay tutorials of my own on this blog so I’ve decided it would be a good time to introduce a new section to the CosplaySass blog: Feature Fridays!
I want to bring to you all some of the coolest, most complex and simply beautiful costumes I’ve seen! By interviewing cosplayers we can get an inside look of their process and see the person behind the art. Follow CosplaySass to stay updated on some of the greatest cosplayers to know about!
I’m super excited to introduce to you the amazing Commonerzcoffi!
She has been cosplaying for years now and has even managed to complete incredible costumes while in school. It’s been amazing to watch her skills evolve throughout the years and I can’t wait to see what she makes next!
What is your name / cosplay name?
Commonerzcoffi /Coffi Commonerz
What first got you into cosplay?
Embarrassingly enough, I discovered cosplay through watching anime AMV’s. One of
the suggested videos was a cosplay contest for some 2006 con and I was like” oh shit,
people can do that?”
I also used to find clothes that were similar to a character I liked but not enough to look
weird and try and put together an outfit based on them. ex: I had tan cargo skinny jeans
and a black v-neck to mimic Kyo Sohma from Fruits Basket. Between that and loving
Halloween I thought..this could be really fun to do.
What is the hardest part of cosplaying for you?
I’m pretty okay at most aspects of the creation process. But wigs drive me absolutely insane. I haven’t had a chance to really get into styling because I pick a lot of characters that have a simple hairstyle. It’s half avoidance and just half my taste in characters….I honestly would say i also have a hard time picking out who I want to cosplay and then sticking to it.
I have difficulty with staying on track so I try to create a schedule and often end up with a lot of partially complete cosplays. I’m doing better though. Katsu is a week away and I’m all packed save for two pieces of cosplay lol.
What’s your favorite character you’ve cosplayed?
THAT is actually the hardest thing ever. It’s a 3-way tie between Numbah 5 (Codename
Kids next door), Chel (The Road to El Dorado) and Harley Quinn (classic suit).
Each one is special to me for different reasons, when I’m dressed as them I’m 3 completely different personalities so is always refreshing.I also just love the reactions I get from each of them because some bring nostalgia, the other just comes from how I play them.
What cosplay took you the longest to complete?
Uhmm, I think Harley was the most laborious. I started with her mallet and worked up to
her suit. It was my first time making a large prop, and I was also in school so it was on
and off working on her from December to May ( a week before Acen).
What have you learned sense you started cosplaying?
I think crafting wise, I learned a lot about making things comfortable, the importance of
pockets, and secret styling. I try to make or get a bag that matches the cosplay so if I get
caught for a pic it doesn’t throw off anything!
As far as the cosplay world. It’s both welcoming and hateful. I have gained a lot of lifelong friends through cosplaying but also learned how unwelcoming the cosplay world is to POC, Black people specifically. It doesn’t scare me anymore, but it’s hella challenging
sometimes because of how uninviting it is to people like me.
Where can we find you online?
My IG is the most active, it’s Commonerzcoffi
I have a FB that I’ll be trying to get back running in the near future Cafe Cosplay
